Personally, I can't
think of anything more frustrating than being incapable
of controlling my own body's motions - not to mention
my own thoughts. For instance, think of any sport or -
for the musicians among us - consider the troubles
rehearsing a hard piece on your preferred instrument.
Of course, it's the incapability of controlling one's
motions (and one's thoughts when it comes to
coordination) which is at the bottom of our troubles.
And that's just frustrating.
So, what tempts people into yearning for drugs? Why
does everybody voluntarily try to reach a state of
alarmingly impaired control of body and mind? The way I
see it, there are mainly two reasons for this
irrational behavior: In the first instance, drug
consumption usually comes along with more positive
seeming effects like an increase of emotional intensity
or illusions which, for example, also underlie the idea
of three- or four-dimensional movies. (What I mentioned
above is usually called "side effects".)
What's more, many people don't perceive impaired
control of body and mind that critically. They are even
glad that something or somebody else is able to take
control. But they usually forget that - in most cases -
a disposal of control doesn't involve a disposal of
responsibility.
The dangers of drug consumption are not only physical. (But nonetheless, it has to be pointed out that physical side effects are definitely not harmless with any drug at a noteworthy dose.) The psychological aspects of drug consumption are even more questionable: Somebody who considers drugs appropriate to stimulating one's emotions will - sooner or later - despise common ways such as media (movies, music, books,...) or sports. There will be evolving a certain laziness eventually ending in a kind of addiction to drugs in general (contrary to the scientific meaning of addiction in terms of physical dependency on a very specific habit or substance, which I don't want to talk about here, since I'm talking about drug consumption on a very low level). And that's definitely not healthy - at least as far as the physical side effects are concerned.
Obviously, I'm of the opinion that drug consumption in general is a bad idea. So, of course, I'm acting accordingly. Unless I ever expected everybody to act like me, I can at least expect of everybody not to look down on this opinion.
